Crypto / Giardia

Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium is a protozoan parasite associated with diarrhoeal illness in most parts of the world and is a frequent cause of travellers diarrhoea. The disease is transmitted by ingestion of the oocyst, which is remarkably resistant to common disinfectants and routine chlorination of drinking water. The identification of Cryptosporidium in faecal specimens obtained from clinical patients and water from environmental sources is made easier with the use of the Cellabs Crypto Cel range of products.

The Cellabs Crypto Cel Reagent is the preferred antibody of the UK Drinking Water Inspectorate.

Giardia

Giardia is a binucleated flagellate protozoa which can exist for days in cyst form. It is a common cause of gastrointestinal disease disease worldwide and of waterborne diarrhoea. The disease is transmitted by ingestion of the cyst and travellers have been found to contract giardiasis from endemic areas. The identification of Giardia in faecal specimens obtained from clinical patients and water from environmental sources is made easier with the use of the Cellabs Giardia Cel range of products.

Testing for both Cryptosporidium and Giardia

Cryptosporidium oocysts and Giardia cysts stained with the Cellabs Crypto/Giardia IFA kit. In addition to products specific for Cryptosporidium or Giardia, Cellabs has a combined product, the Crypto/Giardia Cel, which detects both species. Identification of the Cryptosporidium and Giardia is made using fluorescence and morphological differences between the species. You can clearly see in the image on the right that the Giardia is much larger than the Cryptosporidium. In addition to the convenience of detecting both organisms in the one product, this product is more economical.

Specialised Cryptosporidium and Giardia Products

Cellabs produces a number of specialised products for Cryptosporidium and Giardia. We have recently developed a 15 minute Cryptosporidium stain specifically for use in water testing. This can be provided with or without Evans Blue as a counterstain. Cellabs is currently developing an equivalent product for Giardia and also the Crypto/Giardia product range for which Cellabs will look to gain US EPA approval in the near future.
